Colleges Taking Bigger Bite of Family Incomes

To measure "affordability,” The Chronicle looked at the average net price of flagship universities, relative to median family incomes, in each state for the 2012-13 year. We also calculated the average net price as a share of median family income for 2008-9 and adjusted that figure to 2013 dollars to account for inflation. The percentage-point changes between those two ratios over the five-year period appears in the last column.
