E.g. for every 100,000 people in Austin, roughly 25.1 people were assaulted. Information is from the FBI's UCR database, which records all offenses known to the police. Please note that police data is only a small fraction of all crimes that take place. Thousands of rapes and assaults are not brought to the attention of the police. Therefore, it is difficult to measure these crimes. The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) collects information on crimes suffered by individuals and households, whether or not those crimes were reported to law enforcement. Although only conducted on the national level, the NCVS gives a better idea of the actual number of rapes and assaults that take place.
