The lower line shows the infant mortality rate per 1,000 births in Ireland between 1923 and 1950. The upper line is the death rate per 1,000 births among children born outside marriage in the same period. Note: rates for 1923 to 1931 are inclusive of deaths among children born outside marriage whereas the figures for 1932 onward are exclusive of such deaths and therefore more accurately reflect the disparity between the two rates.
